CATHEDRAL city and county town for Cumbria, site of a frontier outpost for 1,000 years including the Roman fort of Luguvalium on Hadrian's Wall. For many centuries the great castle at Carlisle was a stronghold against the Scots, although Scottish King David I, King of Scotland (1224-1153) held it as part of his own kingdom. The city of Carlisle has strong links to both the North East by the A69 and a motorway link to the North West by the M6.
