The red sandstone of Carlisle Castle is the ideal emblem of the English determination to hold the border during the colourful conflict which dominates its history. This fine fortress comprises a labyrinth of rugged passageways and sturdy stairwells which lead up to the ramparts for a breathtaking view of Carlisle or down to the dungeons. King Edward I held a parliament here. Mary Queen of Scots was held captive here in 1568.
