A TEXTILE town since the thirteenth century, Bolton was the birthplace in 1753 of Samuel Compton, who invented the Spinning Mule. Compton’s developments revolutionised the spinning industry and contributed to the growth of Bolton and other Lancashire Mill towns, but the industry no longer dominates. Today Bolton is almost swallowed up by the suburban growth of Manchester and Salford but it still retains a strong sense of its own, individual, history.
