GOOD centre for exploring both sides of the Border. The little Toll House was once the scene of many runaway marriages. Edward I crossed the ford in 1296 as well as Bruce when he fought Edward II. James IV forded the river in 1513 on his way to defeat and death at Flodden. General Monk raised the famous Coldstream Guard Regiment in 1650 to take part in the Restoration. There is a bridge linking the two countries built by Smeaton in 1766.
