MUSSEL beds at the mouth of the River Esk gave this town its name. Musselburgh overlooks the Firth of Forth on the eastern outskirts of Edinburgh and is the home of Scotland's oldest racecourse (1816). In Roman times nearby Inveresk Hill was the site of a fort. A little further to the east is Prestonpans, site of a battle during the Jacobite rebellion of 1745. The battle site is marked by a cairn.
