ANGLO-Saxon settlement that became a Norman market town and later a wool and linen centre and mill town, but gained world fame with the opening of the Stockton and Darlington in 1825, inaugurating the era of steam locomotion. The town grew into an industrial hub while remaining a market town for its country neighbours. Famed also as 19th century Quaker stronghold dominated by the Pease family and associates. Teesside Airport is near Darlington on the railway line to Middlesbrough.
