St. Andrew's Church

Description

From 12th century, on earlier Saxon site, with tower built as refuge. Giant's Grave in churchyard is two 10th century crosses with hogbacks between them; a smaller cross is Giant's Thumb. Other buildings include 18th century Hutton Hall, Friargate; 18th century Mansion House E of church; and in Bishop's yards a building with a bay window dated 1563 assumed to be Dame Birkett's School where Wordsworth and his sister and his future wife, Mary Hutchinson, had their first lessons. Robinson's School (now TIC) dated 1670
