Celtic saint found elsewhere in Cumbria. Norman origins on earlier foundation. 'The Maid of Buttermere' is buried here as well as John Peel, born at Parkend in 1776, buried 1854, hunting horns decorating his grave. John Woodcock Graves wrote the famous song set to music by William Metcalf, Carlisle Cathedral organist.
