St John's is one of the oldest churches in the city. It is open daily and welcomes visitors from all over the world. The first church was built on this site in c.1130, though most of the present structure dates from the mid 15th century. A number of famous names have been associated with the Church, including Thomas Bewick, Richard Grainger and the celebrated physician John Snow.
