THE place may be named after Oswald the 7th century Northumbrian king. The town was born and developed through textiles, in particular calico printing which was established in 1760 at Brookside Mill by Robert Parsley Peel. Handloom weaver James Hargreaves invented his Spinning Jenny in 1764 while he lived at what is now Stanhill Post Office
