ONCE the greatest cotton-spinning town in the world, Oldham boasted more spindles than the whole of the United States. The industry has now declined but Oldham is the home to other industries such as Ferranti’s electrical engineers and British Aerospace. Oldham dominates the north-eastern corner of the Manchester conurbation only ten miles across the Pennines from the Yorkshire town of Huddersfield.
