MARKET town originally stood on SW slope of nearby Duns Law until completely destroyed by the English in 1545. Rebuilt in its present site 43 years later. In 1639, 20,000 men successfully defied King Charles I and the Scottish Covenanting Army raised the Standard on Duns Law. The town claims to be the birthplace in 1266 of John Duns Scotus, the medieval philosopher, and of Jim Clark the motor racing champion killed in 1968
