ANCIENT town overlooking Yarrow Valley. A statue of Sir Walter Scott who served as Sheriff of Selkirkshire from 1800 until his death in 1832 stands in the triangular Market Place. Mungo Park, who discovered the River Niger, has his statue at the other end of the High Street. Selkirk was once famous for its shoes and inhabitants are still nicknamed 'souter' or shoemaker
