GRETNA Green's reputation for romance was established in the days when Scotland's easier marriage laws attracted runaway lovers from south of the Border who wanted to be married without parental consent under the age of 21. In 1992 for the first time more than three thousand couples came to Gretna to marry in the local registrar's office, and many follow the official ceremony with a visit to the historic blacksmith's shops where weddings once took place over the anvil. A new Registrar's office opened in 1991 to cope with increased demand.
