HERE Christianity was first introduced to Scotland by St. Ninian in about 410 AD. The Saint's shrine continued to attract pilgrims until the Reformation, among them many Royal visitors such as Robert Bruce, James IV and Mary Queen of Scots. Pilgrimages are still made once or twice a year by groups of various religious denominations. The town preserves its medieval street plan.
