HISTORIC market town looped and often flooded by Tees. Traditionally a Yorkshire town, surrounded on three sides by County Durham, but now both sides of the river are in the Borough of Stockton-on-Tees. Once a river port, coach stop, and manufacturing centre with shipbuilding, brewing, tanning, papermaking, clockmaking, ropemaking, barrel and nail-making.
