EAST entrance to Weardale. Founded in Saxon times, market in 1500, one of county's original eight market towns. Interesting buildings include 1614 grammar school. Norman remains in rebuilt 12th century church; 'Chapel Walls' close by are grassy mounds reputed to have been moated.
