FIVE miles NE of Dalton-in-Furness, small town associated with an incongruous trio: Stan Laurel (born here 1890), geographer Sir John Barrow (1764-1848) and George Fox the Quaker. Barrow founded Royal Geographical Society, Fox the Society of Friends and Laurel, with Oliver Hardy, a cult strongly based in Ulverston. Canal in 1796 linked town to the sea but prosperous port was killed by the railway in 1856. Remains a busy market town with narrow interesting streets
