SMALL town situated almost in the centre of the Furness peninsula. Following the foundation of Furness Abbey in 1127 AD, Dalton achieved a position of prominence and prosperity as the market town and judicial capital of Furness. It was as a direct result of the town's close association with the monastery that in 1239 it received the Royal Charter, an annual celebration in the town
