ONCE the site of a Roman fort and possibly an Anglo-Saxon palace belonging to the Kings of Northumbria. Doncaster’s Victorian Church of St George stands on the site of an earlier Medieval church and has a cathedral-like appearance. Horse racing has been held in Doncaster since 1703 and the famous St Leger race has taken place here since 1778.
