PICTURESQUE mill town in West Riding valley with terraces of workers cottages, often of several storeys, built into hillsides. A steep hill connects it to Heptonstall, a village of former weavers' cottages and crooked streets set on the high moorland ridge. The 15th century church was dismantled in 1854 with only the tower, porch and double nave left standing next to its successor. The Octagonal Wesleyan chapel was built in Northgate in 1764. There is also a museum in a 17th century grammar school
