SWALEDALE village, a short distance from James Herriot’s famous ‘Watersplash’ Ford. Just above the village lie the ruins of the ‘dead house’, an overnight resting place on the ‘Corpse Way’. Coffins were left overnight whilst bearers and mourners broke their long journey at the Punch Bowl Inn. The ‘Corpse way’ runs from the top of the dale to Grinton Church and burial ground.
