Museum of Leadmining

Description

Signposted off M74 Junction 13 southbound, junction 14 northbound. Scottish Museum of the Year 1993. Visitor centre. Lochnell mine in which visitors are taken on a guided tour into the hillside to see the working conditions of 18th century lead miners. Visit Straitsteps Cottages where miners' homes of about 1740 and 1890 have been recreated. The museum includes a historic miners library. There is also a self-guided mining trail which allows visitors to discover the archaeology of the Scottish lead industry for themselves. Tearoom, shop and gold panning facilities.
