Berwick Museum and Art Gallery

Description

A kaleidoscope of experiences. Take a walk around the ramparts of this old historic town in "Window on Berwick", looking and listening to the sights and sounds of the past. See the salmon fisherman at work, peer in a farm worker's cottage and down a gloomy coal mine. Pop into the tavern for a moment or visit a laundry. Look into the shop windows and have a go at being a cashier. Become the lighthouse keeper and take a peek at Dr Johnston's cabinet of curiosities. Berwick was a battleground in the Middle Ages. The new "Medieval Berwick" gallery looks at this violent period with plenty of weaponry and a fine reconstruction of Berwick Castle. Finds from recent excavations are on show together with magnificent medieval art from the Museum's Burrell collection. A changing display of the finest items donated to the town by Glasgow shipping millionaire Sir William Burrell includes pictures by masters such as Boudin and Degas are shown alongside an impressive display of Oriental porcelain and bronzes.
