Millom Discovery Centre

Description

An authentic full scale model of a Hodbarrow Mine drift, complete with an actual cage used in the mine complements our mining and iron industry display. There is a tribute to the life and work of Norman Nicholson, who was a writer particularly well know for his poems. A Smithy, showing all the tools of the blacksmith and the swillmaker who fashioned swill baskets from withies. There are peat cutting tools, smocks, churns and articles from the old Banksprings Brewery in the rural room; loads of local photos, a reconstruction of a shop and a typically cluttered 19th century cottage. Prehistoric artefacts, Millom Castle, the Workhouse and the arcade, which displays a variety of authentic garments throughout the ages all have their place.
