Rievaulx Terrace (National Trust)

Description

Two and a half miles NW of Helmsley on B1257. The elegant half-mile long grass covered terrace created by Thomas Duncombe was the setting for elaborate family picnic parties. Carefully planned vistas reveal magnificent views of Rievaulx Abbey and the Hambleton Hills. At each end of the terrace is a classical temple, a small Tuscan rotunda and, open to view, an Ionic Temple elaborately decorated as a dining room. Exhibition of landscape design
