Inn first built in 1689 and once famous for Sally Birkett's notoriously strong ale, commemorated in four lines of verse on the inn sign painted by Julius Caesar Ibbotson in 18th century to pay for his stay during a sketching trip. Modern version shows two men, one thin and pale, the other happy and robust with a mug of ale.
