Original Marks and Spencer Penny Bazaar

Description

The Marks and Spencer Original Penny Bazaar in the Grainger Market is the last surviving example of the shops that gave birth to a legend in retailing. Michael Marks opened the first Penny Bazaar in Leeds in 1884 with the motto: 'Don't ask the price - its a penny!' It was hailed as a revolution, providing high quality goods at affordable prices. Opened in 1895 the Grainger Market shop is the only one of the six the company owned to have survived and it is now regarded as a jewel in the modern M&S shopping empire. The original frontage has been maintained intact and is carefully preserved. The lights have been converted to electricity but the fittings are those used in the days of gas lights. The Penny Bazaar still operates as part of the company with one major change - you can't get as much as you used to for your penny!
