Egglestone Abbey

Description

The charming ruins of a small monastery of Premonstratensian ‘white canons’, picturesquely set above a bend in the River Tees near Barnard Castle. The greater part of the nave and chancel is still standing, and next to the abbey is a fine example of a medieval packhorse bridge. The abbey was the setting for the finale of Walter Scott’s Rokeby.
