Mill owner Sir Titus Salt decided to move his mill to a 'green field site' - and built an entire village for his workers. Salt's Mill opened in 1853 on Salt's 50th birthday but the village took 20 more years to complete. Salt provided everything - neat stone cottages, alms houses, a hospital, shops and a riverside park, but no pub! Saltaire is still a thriving community today. Within the mill there are two restaurants, several shops including a large book shop, outdoor clothes shops, photography gallery, a jewellery shop, Indian rugs and home furnishings and 'The Home' which sells high quality items for the home
