A number of ancient settlements and deserted villages can be seen in the vicinity of Wallington and Bolam. Deserted villages include South Middleton Village of which extensive earthworks remain. Rocky crags are often associated with settlements and forts including Rothley Castle and Codger Fort to the north of Wallington. Shaftoe Crags to the south gave their name to the famous Shafto family.
