Threave Wildfowl Reserve

Description

Situated off the A75, 1 mile W of Castle Douglas, Threave Wildfowl Refuge offers exciting opportunities to view otter, barn owl and kingfisher throughout the year. Wintering wildfowl include Greenland white fronted geese; pink footed geese, whooper swans and wigeon. The summer months bring lapwing, snipe and redshank. An all abilities path leads from Kelton Mains down to Stepping-Stones hide. Other paths and hides overlook Blackpark Marsh and the River Dee, giving good year-round wildlife viewing. Children especially welcome and dogs allowed on leads. Ranger Service available and ranger-led walks throughout the season, please telephone for details. Visitors can now view an osprey nest from a specifically constructed viewing platform. Last year was the second successful year of breeding at the site.
